Solution Solution From concept or idea to real product Cost-efficient Design Conventional Versus Compact Boardgame Design Fastenings Effective client service encompasses advice as well as implementation. We are acutely attuned to identifying for all our clients, but particularly for small and medium-sized companies, solutions to design and production problems that lead to better quality end-products and that are frequently more cost-effective. We have obtained permission from clients to use the following examples. Problem: Our client's designer had executed a brief to produce a box with a curved lid to resemble a treasure chest. CC Perception: Although the idea for the packaging design was sound, we identified a potential problem following production. A curved lid would have required special packaging for shipping, increasing the cost not only of production but also of shipping. In effect, our client would have been shipping air as well as product. Additionally, the boxes would have been very difficult to display in stacked form at point of sale or use. Solution: We suggested a flat top lid, although the graphics for the box still showed a treasure chest. A later design for the box to be a schoolhouse was resolved at the outset by designing a moulded "roof" lid, which still has a flat expanse. Problem: Our client's product – a boardgame – was of a conventional size for such products. Costs of production needed to be carefully managed. CC Perception: We were concerned not just about containing the costs of production but also about the domino effect this would have on shipping costs and warehouse storage space on delivery, at point of sale and use. Solution: We recommended that the board be folded to quarter its normal size, although we consulted specifically on the potential negatives that might result with the end-users. Given the go-ahead, the shape of the game box was reduced significantly, saving on costs of material, and shipping costs and warehousing were also minimised. Problem: Our client's product called for a velcro fastening to secure the contents. In consultation at pre-production, we learned that the product was intended to for heavy use over a long period of time. CC Perception: We could see that the velcro strip would not withstand such heavy use and would eventually either cease to close properly or would come away from the backing. Solution: We recommended to our client the use of a magnetic fastening instead, which would not be subject to the same wear and tear as velcro. Problem: Our client's book was an unusual size. CC Perception: Looking at the specified sheet size, we could see that there would be a considerable amount of paper wastage leading to unnecessary additional costs, as well as being environmentally unfriendly. Solution: We recommended a paper of equivalent quality, but a different sheet size, which would keep trim to a minimum, costs controlled and the environment a little safer. In any service business, clients must feel comfortable with and confident in their supplier. And what if problems develop? We first note the client's deadline for delivery when evaluating the complexities of the project, advise if we feel that there are challenges, and work on a solution with the client. We identify the vendor we think is best suited to the project and obtain a practical schedule. We monitor progress of the project at every stage of production, providing a weekly production schedule. If problems arise, we communicate with the client immediately and work to resolve these with the client and the vendor, including being on-site as and when necessary to ensure successful completion. The following checklist is intended as an aide-memoire for designers prior to sending encrypted files for production. PDF Files (Macintosh format file) For the PDF files for single/spread pages, with 3mm bleeding on all sides: define overprint settings before distilling from application files to PDFs. The color mode must be CMYK , grey tones and bitmap for color pictures, Resolution: 300-400 dpi (images) 1000 – 1200 dpi (line art) Total ink density – 300% Overprint - To avoid knock-out black type and rule in tint color, please select black color Overprint. Black objects have to print over the other color. PDF files must be saved by Acrobat Distiller 8.0 or higher and all the fonts are embedded . Make sure that Acrobat Distiller is set to the "Press" option, and convert RGB images into CMYK before creating the PDF files. Before sending out the data disk, please ensure all the fonts, images, logo and working files are provided. Please use FLIGHT CHECK for checking the disk if possible. Is there a language problem? Quite the reverse; we have a multi-lingual staff who can communicate with our vendors in Hong Kong, Malaysia and China, although English is widely spoken in Hong Kong and Malaysia and increasingly in China. Handiwork section What is the MOQ? When a prospective client submits a specification to Colorcraft, we will reply by e-mail within three working days of receipt of the specification. What type of files can Colorcraft work with? We can work with the following files: a. InDesign, Adobe Illustrator b. Photoshop c. PDF Standard (all in Macintosh versions) What are the standard paper sizes in the market for text? a. 25" x 38" b. 31" x 43" c. 35" x 47" What page count is workable? a. One full signature is normally 16pp per section b. A half signature is normally 8pp per section c. Overall page count should be divisible by four What if we have only one additional page? There are two options: Print the page as part of a 4pp section and leave the remaining pages blank or use them for notes and/or promotional material. Or, tip in the odd page by hand. What are the advantages of one over the other method? Hand tipping is an expensive method because of the time and labour involved. The cost would exceed that of the extra paper required for a 4pp section. Depending on the format, hand-tipping may also not be as aesthetically pleasing. What are your general recommendations for paper selection for printing? As a general rule, the following are our recommendations: a. Full colour printing – coated paper, either glossy or matt art b. Black & white printing – uncoated woodfree or novel paper What is the minimum print screen that we have to have for press? We strongly recommend clients have at least a 175dpi screen for press. What is the maximum print size you can support? 28" x 40", with our current vendors. We may be able to source a larger format on request. What are the most common methods of shipping used? Cost, Insurance and Freight (CIF) We are responsible for the cost of shipping the goods to the named sea port. (Port to Port) Delivered at Place (DAP) Similar to CIF terms but additionally including inland delivery from sea port to the specific address, entails Colorcraft arranging import customs clearance on behalf of buyer and the carriage of goods by sea to the buyer's warehouse. Free On Board (FOB) Seller is responsible for the cost of goods to the point of delivery to the warehouse of the buyer's freight-forwarding agent. The risk of loss of or damage to the goods is transferred from seller to the buyer when the goods have been placed on board the vessel at the port of shipment.
